Year 2002 reports from Frank
I won't be able to keep this reports page updated as often and as accurately as in previous years. I may be a few days late.  I'll do what I can when I can.  I apologize. The data for this page is taken from my back porch located about a few miles east of Gaylord, Michigan.  Remember to check out the message board also. It is a good source of info for different areas. Thanks for sticking with me.     .... Frank

Well the season is over now for morels. We missed out on this last week of decent yellow morel picking due to work demands. Visit our message board as folks their are now talking over other types of mushrooms to pick during summer and fall. Quite informative.

I went back in our woods with Deb to see where she found those whites. We found a patch with about 30 very large ones, but they were to far gone to pick. Broke my heart. I still can't believe they were in our woods.

Actually we found about 40 whites, but after inspecting them threw all but 8 out. They were too far gone. Should've been at that patch 3 days ago I guess.   Dont let our low numbers of whites and grays discourage you. We are new to finding the whites. Sure different than blacks. We CAN reconize Elm and Black Ash now though.  LOL  That helps.

Haven't been out this week except Debbie went out yesterday. Reports from others are spotty and not very promising yet. We are all hoping for the yellows to show and become the bumper crop that the blacks wern't.

Deb got out for a bit again and found 19 blacks. Forecast is for a chilly Thursday with rain/snow mix. Then warming up into the 50's and 60's for the next few days. I should be able to get into the woods this weekend. YIPEEEE!

We still have between 3" and 10" of snow on the ground, depending on where in upper MI. you go. Forecast for this coming week is for 40's and 50's. So maybe we can melt the snow and begin to warm things up a bit. Let's hope so!

March

H 35°

 a TON of it!

We have got more snow in March than we did all winter in most areas! The temps have been quite low as well. We were still having below 0 temps at night even at the end of March. As low as -15° below on a few occasions. Not much ground warming here to say the least.
