Icon16 Big white puffball w/ polygon pattern?!

Puffball is mostly just a loose term, as far as I know.
I wonder if someone could help me ID this mushroom.

I know I've eaten "White puffballs" here, from Michigan...
But what I don't know is, can I eat this...it looks like the ones they say grow in the southwest. But i'm unsure.
It's the size of my fist.

Thanks,

~Blue~

Its an educated guess but I'd say you're still in the Calvatia species. Likely Calvatia gigantea that grew so fast it split the skin. Did you cut it open? White inside? Any odor's you're not familiar with in giant puffballs. If there was more of "stalk" I'd say you had a Calvatia craniiformis.

Re: Big white puffball w/ polygon pattern?!

Thanks for the reply! Ok...I just cut it.
It smells like a regular white mushroom, like immature 'bellas.
Pure white...actually had about 1/4" thick skin over the meat/spore center.
Everything looks good to me, as far as I can tell.
Here's a pic.

Oh yeah, I found it in a grassy patch among others, just outside the woods.

I was DELICIOUS. Tried one piece, waited 12 hours...fried it up in butter, it tasted like extremely well cooked tofu, and even had an uncanny resemblance to chicken. Will be snagging a few dozen more!
