Are these half free morels

Are these half free morels and can you eat them

They sure look like half-free morels, and yes, you can eat them.
Verpas (toxic to some people) have a cottony substance in the stalk, and cap is attached only at the top of the stalk, unlike the half-free, which is attached half-way down the cap.

If the caps pull off the stem, they're False Morels. Some people eat the caps but I would not advise it.

By looking at the pic they look like the false morel to me........I was always under the impression that the half free morel (aka peckerhead) was attached to the stem like other morels. The only difference is that the cap on the half free is a lot smaller than on the other morels.

A half free cap is attached 1/2 way and is hollow. Similar to a verpa where as a verpa has fuzz inside

The cap of the false ones will pull right off easily leaving the stem, the half free will not pull off without taking some stem with it. Also, the caps of the half frees have less grooves in them than the Verpas.
The ones pictured are some nice half frees, enjoy :)
