Re-grow your green onions!

I've never completely used up a clump of chives no matter how many shoots I cut off.

Now why didn't I think about that a minute?
If it works for chives why wouldn't it work for green onions?
Shouldn't the green shoots growing out of the onion bags give me a clue. LOL

I just happened to hear an off hand comment, that you could take an unused portion of a green onion with root attached to grow new shoots.

Just leave the bottom 2 or 3 inches with roots and put it in water, or pot it in soil. Place in a window and it will re-grow new shoots. I just tried it in a glass of water and they sent new shoots up right away!

I was going to pot them, but after reading on the net that they get stronger flavor and a little tougher texture with each cutting, I decided that just leaving in water will do. I rinse them well and replace with new water every 2 days to keep crud from growing in the water. Like you do with cut flowers.
Probably get 3-4 cuttings at least before they are stronger than you'd like a green onion to be.

There is a lot of times I want only 2 or 3 green onions, but have to buy the whole bunch and end up throwing the rest away eventually.
Now I can cut costs. That's always a good thing.

This would be a fun project for young kids (and silly adults like me) to enjoy. Just think how excited a 6 or 7 yr old child would be to see their own green onions being used with dinner.

Maybe I'll do some pictures of the next batch and post them.

Anyone else do this? And if so, how many cuttings do you get before they are too strong or tough?
